Qualifications
I am a Medical Practitioner, registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), London since 1995. I qualified as a Candidatus Medicinae et Chirurgiae from University of Iceland, in 1985. I have a Diploma in Clinical Neurology from the Institute of Neurology, University of London, 1992. I obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2000. I was accorded status of a Specialist in Psychiatry by the GMC, under the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order, 2001. I have a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Studies, University of London 2001. I am approved by the Secretary of State under Section(12) of the Mental Health Act, 1983, in having special expertise and knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Professional Commitments
I have been working full time in private practice from January 2006. My work is divided between Cygnet Hospital Bierley in Bradford where I am Medical Director and Cygnet Hospital Harrogate in Harrogate. In Bierley (a low secure unit for NHS clients), I am involved with a Personality Disorder Ward, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a Complex Need Rehabilitation Ward. In Harrogate I am involved with inpatient detoxification of alcohol, general inpatient care and outpatient work. I have a special interest in psychotherapy and management of psychological trauma. I keep up to date in my practice. I am a member of a continuous professional developmental group and I have annual appraisal.
I am an independent psychiatric practitioner doing medico-legal work since 2000.
Clinical Training and Experience
My general professional training in Internal Medicine and Neurology was in Iceland at the Reykjavik City Hospital from 1985-1990. Whilst working in the area of neurology I had a special interest in pain and pain management including chronic back pain. I then worked in General Practice until 1996 where I developed special interest in musculoskeletal problems, psychological trauma and psychotherapy. During this time I took courses in orthopaedic medicine which included manipulations and injection techniques, which I used along with my acupuncture skills to treat patients with various musculo-skeletal problems.
I undertook training in Psychiatry to attain Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists at the Guy’s rotation in London between 1996 and 2000. I then undertook higher training in Psychiatry as a Specialist Registrar at the Guy’s rotation between 2000 and 2001.
I became a Consultant in Adult General Psychiatry in 2001 and worked for West Sussex Health and Social Care Trust between 2001 and 2004. I was appointed Clinical Tutor for Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward’s Heath by Royal College of Psychiatrists. I worked as a long term locum consultant in Adult General Psychiatry in Hastings for the East Sussex County Healthcare NHS Trust between 2004 and 2005.
